Lutein is a yellow carotenoid found in many plants and animal tissues. It is the primary carotenoid in the macula (the central area of the eye’s retina). Clinical studies have shown that Lutein may protect the macula from potentially damaging forms of light and thus may slow or stop the progress of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

The human macular pigment (MP) is composed of lutein and zeaxanthin. Lutein filters out blue light and near-UV light from the macula, which seems to retard the aging of the eye lens. AMD is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among older patients throughout the world. Food sources of Lutein include egg yolks, green vegetables and fruits like prunes, oranges, papayas, and peaches. Lutein used in dietary supplements and the food industry is commercially derived from the dried petals of marigold flowers, the most abundant source of lutein in nature.

Vision Protection
Clinical studies clearly show the relationship between consuming more lutein and increased density of macular pigment. Dietary supplementation with lutein may prevent or slow AMD and a recent study found that lutein appears to reverse some symptoms of vision loss associated with AMD.

Natural State
The lutein molecule is often found in nature esterified with fatty acids. Once consumed, the body naturally converts the lutein esters to lutein. Lutein from lutein esters is chemically the same as lutein from other sources.
