RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA –Blue California, an ingredient manufacturer in Southern California, has introduced VitaDHA™, a Nano-encapsulated, deodorized and water-soluble DHA derived from fish in powder and liquid form which makes it ideal for food, beverage and nutritional supplements applications. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an omega-3 fatty acid, is an essential nutrient and structural component of brain cells. Unlike other tissues in the body, the nervous system is enriched in polyunsaturated fatty acids such as DHA. Despite its abundance in the nervous system, DHA is not synthesized by the body and therefore DHA must be ingested from dietary sources and transported to the brain. DHA plays a crucial role throughout the human lifecycle. During late pregnancy and the early postnatal period, neurodevelopment of an infant’s brain is exceptionally rapid, and substantial amounts of fatty acids, especially DHA, are critical to ensure proper brain and retina development. Later in life, elderly patients with low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in the blood show greater decline in cognitive functions. DHA deficiency in adults has been recently linked also to memory loss, dementia, depression and poor vision. An April 18, 2007 Journal of Neuroscience article suggests that diets rich in DHA can help prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease later in life. Researchers at the University of California, Irvine found that DHA may help slow the growth of two kinds of brain lesions associated with Alzheimer's disease. Previous studies have shown that DHA may have therapeutic value for Alzheimer’s patients, but this research is among the first to show that it may delay the onset of the disease. Good sources of DHA are coldwater fish, eggs, organ meats, micro-algae, fortified foods and food supplements. In order to maintain proper DHA levels, nutritionists recommend eating cold-water fish, such as salmon, two to three times a week. If this is not an option, supplementation with 80-100 mg/day of DHA is recommended. DHA has also been shown to reduce levels of blood triglycerides. Most research links high triglycerides with heart disease. DHA alone appears to be just as effective as fish oils in beneficially lowering triglyceride levels in people at risk for heart disease. Cecilia McCollum, Blue California’s Executive Vice President states, “This nanoencapsulated DHA from fish has been deodorized in order to make it more palatable for children’s formulas and consumers of all ages. Better-tasting chewable tablets and liquid formulations are now possible with VitaDHA™”. Adds McCollum, “This new process eliminates the characteristic taste of DHA and makes supplementation a lot easier.” For more information, contact Cecilia McCollum at Blue California, 30111 Tomas, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA 92688.
