RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA –Blue California, an ingredient manufacturer in Southern California, announces a scientific seminar by leading macular pigment researcher John Landrum, PhD, at SupplyExpo 2005 in Anaheim, CA on March 19 at 10 am. Lutein is the primary carotenoid in the macula (the central area of the eye’s retina). Lutein’s special ability to increase macular pigment and shield the eye from damaging sunlight has been shown to decrease the risk and significantly slow the progress of age-related macular degeneration. Cecilia McCollum, Blue California Vice President of Sales and Marketing, explains, “We are proud to provide scientists involved in product development in our industry with the opportunity to learn the latest scientific research on carotenoids and formulation with lutein for vision and eye health products. The presentation, titled Lutein & Zeaxanthin: Recent Progress in Understanding the Role of Carotenoids in the Human Retina, will address carotenoids synthesis and definitions of xanthophyll, lutein, zeaxanthin and fatty acids, as well as explaining macular pigment, age-related macular degeneration and ocular health hazards.” McCollum hopes that participants will gain a better understanding of the differences between lutein esters and “free” lutein. John T. Landrum, PhD “The highest accumulation of lutein and zeaxanthin in the body is in the eye,” states Dr. Landrum. “Because of their high concentration in the eye and their high concentration at the point of greatest visual acuity, we believe they play an important role in the health of the macula.” Blue California specializes in the manufacture of botanical extracts and other specialty ingredients using raw materials from around the world.
